This week’s free transcription is a Charlie Parker solo arranged for bass.
It’s a transcription of Cool Blues, a melody that Parker often quotes in other solos on other songs. It’s simple and memorable.
When I listened to the solo, I could actually sing back large parts of it fairly quickly, as opposed to, say, Cheryl or Donna Lee — which are two great songs to learn and fun to play -- which are much busier and more difficult to memorize off the bat.
Check out the great sense of melody in the solo, for example, the idea in measures 22-23 that continues to end every major phrase in mm 34-35 and 47-48. Note: Parker solos before AND after the piano & bass solos, which is marked accordingly. Have fun!
