Transcription: Lester Young Solo for Bass - "Almost Like Being In Love"

May 9, 2016

This is Lester Young’s tenor sax solo on 1952’s Almost Like Being in Love with the Oscar Peterson Trio.  Young was one of the first jazz musicians I felt like I “understood.”

His note and rhythm choices always seemed appropriate, and I could relate to his softer tone and smooth vibrato.

What I like about this solo is, as the listener, it doesn’t feel like there are any “extra” notes… every note is meaningful and played with love.  No guessing, no searching — not that these are always bad qualities, to be sure — but each one is clearly intentional.

But regardless of “why”, at the end of the day I listen because I enjoy it!
