Here’s the full transcription for Nathan Watts’ bass line on Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder. The first thing that jumps out at you: the groove.
The pocket is a mile deep, and Watts swings low.
If you want to work on your 16th note groove reading, this is a great one to sink your teeth into.
This was made originally with good old pencil and paper, then entered into Finale. I never use tempo-adjusting software, as I enjoy the challenge of transcribing at the original tempo, which if you think about it, is what all the masters did before such software existed. They listened to it a thousand times instead of a hundred, memorized it, and played along. Something I highly recommend if you're looking to improve your ears.
