When I first heard this, I thought, “Oh, this’ll be fun to transcribe!” Many, many post-naive hours later, here it is!
A wonderful solo by Sonny Rollins on the standard “St. Thomas” from his 1956 album Saxophone Colossus (appropriately named), of course, arranged for bass.
I particularly enjoyed his longer eighth note phrases, as well as the overall shape of the solo. Lots to be said here, but I’ll leave you to the recording and the transcription. As always, I tend to steer clear of notating too many articulations and dynamics – leaving those to one’s ears and interpretation.
If you can master this beast, hats off to you! Happy playing!
